Diatomaceous
Earth is a fine white powder made of the fossilized remains of diatoms
(a type of algae that lived in the seas & lakes many millions of years
ago). It is 100% natural and it works because at a microscopic level the
powder is both very sharp and very absorbent, so effectively dries-out
parasites it comes into contact with causing them to shrivel and die.
Diatomaceous Earth is an approved E.U. Feed Additive (Silicon Dioxide)
E551C having been used for many years for controlling parasites naturally.
It is often added to grain when it is stored to guard against bugs and
insects (so most of us if we eat bread will be consuming some each day
ourselves). There are a lot of people who swear by the benefits of taking
this daily themselves but we leave that for you to research and make your
own decision.
Poultry use:
Diatomaceous Earth is an essential part of every poultry keepers' arsenal.
Routinely add 500 grams per 20 kg feed to control internal parasites in
poultry. When added to poultry feed it reduces intestinal worms and also
the number of flies caused by the chicken's poo (as it prevents fly larvae
from developing in the manure). Importantly, parasites do not become chemically
resistant to it, so regular routine use is possible. Very effective against
red mite in the housing area. Dust under perch ends, around flooring,
walls etc.
Diatomaceous Earth can be used
in your hen's dust bath, added to where they lay their eggs, or applied
directly to the hen separating the feathers to apply. This is a successful
way to reduce and eliminate mites or lice.
Other Uses
In the Home:
Is effective against household insects including woodlice, ants, earwigs,
cockroaches, silverfish, flies, fleas and bed bugs. Simply sprinkle some
of the powder where the insect will come into contact with it. You may
wish to use an attractant or bait to encourage them to make contact with
it.
Pet Care:
Is safe to use with large or small cats & dogs against insects and
parasites such as, fleas, ticks, lice, and internal parasites and worms.
As a wormer add ½ teaspoon to feed for cats, small dogs and kittens.
Add 1-2 teaspoons for medium/large dogs. Used regularly 2 or 3 times a
week helps keep pets clear. Sprinkle on rugs or directly into coat to
clear fleas etc.
General Livestock:
Idea for the control of fleas and ticks, some research indicates increased
feed absorption and conversion, reduces moisture and odour in animal living
area, stops flies from hatching in animal manure. Reduces & prevents
worms and other internal parasites. For large livestock add to feed at
1 part to 10 parts feed.
Plant Protection:
Safe to use in the garden against insects, slugs, whitefly, beetles, mites,
grasshoppers, green fly, fungus fly, aphids, black fly and many more.
Suitable for use in the greenhouse or outdoors on fruits, vegetables,
flowers, grains and grass. Sprinkle at the base of plants to kill crawling
pests. Add to water and spray onto leafage for flying insects.
